How difficult is it to install the windowbox
Our windowboxes have been designed to be easy to install. A reasonably competent DIYer can have a windowbox ready for plants in around 20 minutes. See our step by step assembly for a brief description.
What width windowbox should I order?
Measure the window and add a minimum of 3” (7.5 cm) on either side, as the side brackets need to be fixed beyond the window frame into the brick or stonework.
The depths of the base plate is 9 ¾ “ (25 cm)). With the reveal of the window you will actually have approximately 3” 7.5 cm) extra space and can therefore accommodate pots with a diameter of up to 30 cm.
If you have outward opening windows, you can attach the windowbox below the sill. And don’t forget the garden or patio wall. Your Iron and Stone Windowbox can provide an attractive feature on a blank wall.
Will the windowboxes fit all window sill sizes?
The Iron and Stone Windowboxes will fit most sill sizes. It does not matter if the windowbox is wider than the sill or if the sill juts out beyond the windowbox or if it slopes downward. As the windowbox has a carrying capacity of 50 kgs in weight, it does not need to be supported by a sill.
Are the windowboxes suitable for bay windows?
Iron and Stone Windowboxes are suitable for bay windows with flat pillars and flat brickwork. They are not suitable for bay windows with curved or grooved pillars. Watch out for our slot-together decorative boxes, which will be coming soon. These four-sided boxes in the same designs will solve this problem.
What load can the windowboxes carry?
Up to 50 kgs in weight, so you can attach the windowboxes to garden and patio walls or under windows. We recommend the use of plastic troughs and pots to minimise unnecessary weight.
Do the windowboxes need maintenance?
The Iron and Stone Windowboxes are maintenance free! Made from rustproof, powder-coated aluminium, they will not rust and will not need painting. They will last for years and years. If you want to change the colour, use a Hammerite paint.
What about conservation areas and listed buildings?
Iron and Stone Windowboxes are not permanent fixtures and therefore can be assembled and fixed on listed buildings in conservation areas without permission.
